SUBJECT: Tails from the Bark Side - 3/10/25

March 10, 2025
This Week at Hicks

All Week

  • It's minimum day for K-5th grade (teacher conferences)! Wednesday after school programs are still on, but there is NO math after-school program this week.

  • Check the Lost and Found rack (outside the small MPR - just inside the front gates of the school) - it's a sweatshirt and water bottle bonanza out there! Anything remaining Friday afternoon will be donated to Goodwill - so claim it now!

  • Scholastic BOOK FAIR Week!Brought to you by the PTO!
    • Teachers take their classes to visit the book fair during the school day, and students can also visit during their recess and after lunch.
    • You can shop WITH your students before school (7:45 AM - 8:30 AM) or after school (1:24 PM - 2:30 PM) - and of course at Evening at the Book Fair on Wednesday!

    • What we ask of YOU (the parents):
      1. Provide your student(s) with either cash OR load their "e-wallet" with Scholastic. If they have funds on their e-wallet, they simply tell our volunteers their name, and they will be able to shop with that credit.
      2. Make sure your student knows which method of payment they will be using. Our teachers are not always aware of who has funds on their e-wallet and who plans to use cash.
      3. Volunteer with us for a shift! Shifts run throughout the school day in short blocks - and it's fun!
      4. Consider picking up an extra book to donate to kids hospitalized at CHOC as we support Ethan & Choco's Book Club! There will be a donation box at checkout - let your student know or drop one in yourself! (Did you know Ethan is a TUSD student!? We're so proud of him and honored to support his Book Club!)
      5. You'll also see book boxes from each teacher - consider picking out one to gift to the class!

Tuesday:

Wednesday:

  • Evening at the Book Fair - shop the Scholastic Book fair AND the Husky Gear pop-up shop as a family from 4:30 - 7:30 PM! Pizza, drinks and snacks available for sale too - make a night of it!

  • 5th graders: It's the deadline to purchase your class shirt. Contact your class parent with questions.

Thursday:

This Weekend:

  • Tournament of Champions: Hoops Classic. Watch for the schedule in our Wednesday email and come cheer on Husky teams as they compete against other Tustin and Irvine schools.

Planning ahead:

  • Next week is Spring Break! No school until Tuesday, March 25th.

  • Session 4 of our Wednesday After School programs will start on April 2nd. Registration OPENS the day we get back from Spring Break (the 25th) and closes that Friday! Check out the lineup of classes and get all of the registration details you need!

So much more to come... you know where to find the details:

Husky Happenings
BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE PTO
Some Enchanted Evening...

It was a magical night in the Enchanted Forest for our Daughter's Dance - and no amount of rain could dampen the spirits of these dads and special guests that came to twirl with the girls!

Our incredible dance committee created a wonderland of memories for our families - we are grateful for their hard work to make it happen!

Check out photos from the event in the album! Scroll down in the album to find ALL of the Photo Booth pics - you look AMAZING!

Honoring Lindsay & Maitry

Last week was the annual TUSD Coordinating Council Volunteer awards - where two of our long-standing dedicated volunteers, Lindsay Svidergol and Maitry Dholakia were honored for their years of service with HCE.

These two women have served in multiple roles on the PTO executive board, spearheaded programs and initiatives that have turned into best practices - not just for our school, but inspiring success around the district!  We are grateful for the impact they have made, and proud that the legacy they leave will help us continue to flourish as they "graduate" to middle school!

We appreciate you, Lindsay and Maitry! Thank you for your leadership and support!

Parent-To-Parent Corner

We know... there's a lot of deadlines... here's a summary of a few important ones:

Summer Camps: Check last Friday's "howl" for details on the programs being offered right at Hicks, and you can also find programs at Tustin Summer Academy offered by TPSF - as well as some  really cool summer camps and classes offered by our sponsors (like Kumon, Magikids, Fallowfield Montessori and Code Ninjas)!

Birthday wishes: If your student is celebrating a birthday in April or May- BOOK YOUR MARQUEE greeting now. We know we talk about this deadline a lot - but we can't stress enough - we can't do late orders. Just get it done now and be ready!

Yearbooks: Yearbooks are available for pre-sale only (not sold on campus) and the deadline is APRIL 14th. Order yours now

PTO Update

At our March PTO meeting on Friday:

  • Mrs. Vela gave an update on the Chinese Immersion Program as they begin to hire teaching staff and para-educators. Connect with school admin directly with questions!
  • Mr. Drake spoke about attendance - and reminded families that you can apply for "Independent Study" for planned absences of even 1 day! This is especially important as we head into Spring Break - reporting your absence in advance helps your student AND the school. Talk to the front office team for information!
  • Our Co-Presidents thanked everyone who completed the survey expressing their interest in Board and committee roles next year. They'll be reviewing and reaching out to interested individuals over the next few weeks - with a goal of presenting a slate of nominations at the April meeting. You can learn more about the process and still complete the survey here
  • A revision of the PTO Bylaws was announced- available for review by all PTO members on our documents page. The Bylaws will be up for a confirmation vote in our April Meeting.

PTO members will be able to see the full minutes of the meeting once they are posted on the Documents page
